About our tours

Why us?

We’re fun.

The whole point of traveling is new experiences – and to have fun while doing so.

Our philosophy is like this: if you were traveling to see good friends, where would they take you? What would they show you?

We know our stuff.

We don’t outsource anything. We do the research and logistics. We choose the hotel, the wineries and the culture only after evaluating in person (sometimes multiple times). We have lived in Portugal since 2005.

We are the guide.

We own an inn in the countryside of Portugal. We meet lots of tour groups and guides. Frequently, the guide is an outsider, not connected to the group or the area. Our goal is to do a limited number of tours each year and to always be the guide.

We may become friends.

We are fortunate we have been able to combine our experience in hospitality and wine with a love of food, culture, travel and people. We may be your guide for a week, but even if we don’t see each other often, we are hopefully your friend.

What makes a Tinto tour unique?

In a word, knowledge. A second word, service. A third, community. What makes a Tinto tour special? We attract the right kinds of people – those that enjoy great food, great wine, great company. You’ll be interested in meeting your fellow travelers. We only go to places where we have at least as much knowledge as a local. It’s less a tour than it is being guided by friends who know the area. Our goal is to take you to places that even if you did the research, there is a high likelihood you wouldn’t the places we will show you. Our days follow a rhythm. We don’t wake up at the crack of dawn. You eat a leisurely breakfast on your own. We then spend some time on a cultural activity. Its not about ticking boxes off a list or seeing how many churches you can visit. The goal is to show you one special cultural item per day. Local food and wine is an integral part of our experience. We try the things that make our places unique and special. We don’t rush thru a meal. We indulge in a good way.

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

We selected the end of June for our trip to Lisbon and the Alentejo this year. Lisbon is the kind of place where even in the middle of summer, you may need a sweater in the evening. The sea air can cool things off quickly. It should be warm during the day, the sky is typically a deep blue, and most importantly – NO humidity. Our trips are not terribly strenuous, so heat shouldn’t be a factor.

What if I want to go off on my own during a Tinto tour?

Our goal is for you to have the trip of a lifetime. To think back on your experience with us as one of your top travel moments.

We aren’t fundamentalists. If you want to spend an afternoon, evening or day on your own exploring, we are here to help. You’ll barely realize you are part of an organized group. We truly designed these tours for people that don’t perceive themselves as tour group people.

What is the tinto tour cancellation policy?

Because our group size is small, our tours are nonrefundable. It is very difficult to find someone to replace you last minute. If you think there is a risk of not going, we highly recommend purchasing trip insurance. There are many reputable trip insurance companies in the market.

What time do you start in the morning?

Breakfast at the hotel is generally served from 8am until 10:30am. Our goal is to start each day no earlier than 10am and generally around 10:30am. Once we reach a destination, our goal is to have no day trip be more than a 45 minute drive from our hotel – on average no more than 30 minutes.

What if I want a customized tour or itinerary?

We have the willingness and ability to craft a personalized tour for you (whether you are a single traveler, couple or small group of couples). The itinerary and cost are provided to you based on your specifications and desires. Because all of our time is valuable, we do charge an initial nominal cost for purposes of creating your draft itinerary that is refunded once you book a trip with us.

Terms and Conditions

Prepayment is required. A non refundable minimum deposit of $1,000 per person guarantees your space. Payment is due in full 120 days prior to the trip. If you choose to pay the deposit, you are subject to currency fluctuations. If you pay in full, we are responsible for all currency fluctuations.

Because of the small group size and the fact that it is difficult to find replacements last minute, these trips are non refundable. If you believe there is a chance you may not be able to go on the trip, consider purchasing trip insurance.
